The Canterbury Rams have announced Xavier Thames will be the teams 2nd import for the 2018 season. Xavier Thames who is a 6’3 guard will be joining fellow American import Winston Shepard. Xavier Thames is most recognised by being drafted as the 59th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors. After a college career at San Diego State where he was teammates with new Winston Shepard where in 2014 they led San Diego State to the highest finish in School history by making the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division 1 Tournament. Xavier Thames went onto be the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and was named to the Mountain West Conference All Defensive Team. Xavier hails from Sacramento, California.
Xavier has also played professionally for Sevilla (Spain), Fort Wayne Ants (NBA G League), MZT Skopje (Macedonia), Bnei Herzliya (Isarael) & Trikala Aries (Greece). While playing for MZT Skopje he led the team to the Macedonian League championship.

Xavier will be joining 6’8 forward Winston Shepard who has most recently been playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League. Winston also has experience playing for Alba Fehervar in Hungary where his team won the league championship and played in the Europe Cup. Both Xavier and Winston will be arriving to Christchurch on Saturday and will be special guests at next week Canterbury Rams holiday camps.
With the return of local Cantabrian Taylor Britt from US college and the return of Tony Tolovae and the inclusion of young New Zealand big man Troy Temara the Rams are developing a squad that will look to battle against early season favourites Wellington Saints, Southland Sharks, Hawkes Bay Hawks and Nelson Giants. The Rams open the season against the Super City Rangers on the 27th April at Cowles Stadium. The season is highlighted with a showdown on 8th June at Horncastle Arena between the Canterbury Rams and Wellington Saints.
