The NZNBL’s reigning MVP and Canterbury Rams Forward Marcel Jones has been announced as the player of the week for Round 7 of this year’s competition. This is the second time the 31-year-old California native has won the award this season, and there is no doubt he has the ability to win again as the Canterbury Rams continue to keep their place in the top 4.
Marcel Jones has gone above and beyond in his third season with the Rams, averaging a staggering 26.1 points and 10.2 rebounds in the ten games he and his team have played. Jones has been the leading scorer in the majority of the games in which he has laced up in this year, with many teams across the country seeing him as one of the biggest threats.
In an interview earlier in the season, Captain Marques Whippy said that Jones has taken his game to a new level this year, which he didn’t even think was possible after his efforts last season.
Jones proved he is more than deserving of the player of the week honors, tallying 41 points and 12 rebounds in the 106-89 win over the Taylor Hawks last Tuesday.
Jones will have to continue to displaying his skills to help the Rams stay alive in the top 4. They currently sit third with a record of 5-5 and face a couple of big games in the coming weeks. They take on the Southland Sharks tomorrow night in Invercargill, they will then fly up North to face the Taranaki Mountainairs on Sunday before returning home on the 14th of May to take on the Southland Sharks yet again.
