AUCKLAND FIND FORM AGAINST RAMS

The
WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams have relinquished their
position in the National Basketball League top four after
losing both of their away games on the weekend. On
Saturday night the Rams were comprehensively outclassed
by Blockbuster Auckland 99-79, while on the following
afternoon at North Harbour, they were defeated 91-81 by
the PoeNamo Kings.
The Rams were pushed aside by last year's champions in
convincing style on Saturday. Despite trailing by just
two at the end of the first quarter 26-24, the Rams were
unable to keep up. Auckland progressed to a 51-38 lead by
half time, and a 75-56 advantage by the third quarter
break.
For the Rams, John "Pope" Whorton, fronted up
and scored the game-high 29 points, as well as grabbing
nine rebounds. It was a significant performance from the
towering centre, as he took the court for the entire
duration of the match. Andrew Gardiner ably supported the
effort of Whorton and shot 9 from 14 in his tally of 20
points. Next best for the Rams was Craig Farrant and Luke
Ruscoe with ten and eight points respectively.
A solid team performance saw six of their northern
opponents register double figure points tallies. Ben
Pepper once again proved decisive, collecting 19 points
and 12 rebounds, while he was backed by contributions
from Dillon Boucher and Aaron Olson who both scored 17
points. Tall Black Paul Henare also chimed in with 11
points and an incredible nine assists.
