KNIGHTS SEASON STATS

<< EXCERPT FROM 2001 TEAM GUIDE >>>

The Canterbury Knights are the developmental team for the Canterbury Rams. This year the Knights will compete in the Lower South Conference (LSC) of the Conference Basketball League (CBL) or 2nd division. To qualify for the CBL National Finals Series, teams must finish in the top two positions of the LSC after two rounds of competition.

This season the Knights will compete against last year’s national runner-up the Kaikoura Whale Riders, South Island rival Otago and a new team from the Southern Institute of Technology (Christchurch).

The 2001 Knights have a new management staff with Peter McAllister (Coach) Dave Harrison (Assistant Coach) and Dene Robinson (Manager). Pete is an experienced Canterbury Junior coach and an excellent role model for the Knights players. Dave comes fresh from seven years coaching experience with the Canterbury Secondary Schools Boys’ Champion, Middleton Grange. Dene is new to the managing role, but is a veteran of 18 years of club and representative basketball.

The new management staff have assembled some of Canterbury’s top Junior and Men’s Premier grade club players. The side is captained by “coach on the floor” point guard Clinton Olson, who will also assist in the management of the Knights.

Four Canterbury Rams squad members will represent the Knights throughout the season. This includes athletic guard Tim Edmonds, the Knights leading point scorer (14.9 per game) and rebounder (5.9 per game) from last season. The versatile Smart brothers, Hayden and Boyd, will add a scoring punch to the Knights and solid rebounding ability.

New Zealand junior representative Mark McLaughlin is an outstanding outside shooter and can also handle the point guard duties.

Other Knights squad members include University club team-mates Nigel Buchanan and Blase Dowall. Nigel is an excellent defender, has a solid three point shot and amazing jumping ability. Blase coaches the Middleton Grange Boys team and has been a solid contributor for the successful University side.

The hustling Howell brothers, Scott and Richard, will add to the deep forward line-up of the Knights. The Howells have the ability to hit mid range jump shots regularly and possess a “never say die” attitude at both ends of the floor.

Ex-Nelson Giants squad member, centre Matt Havill, joins the Knights after some impressive seasons with the Checkers club side.

Nathan Hyde is a fundamentally sound forward who has recently moved to Christchurch, and was a member of the successful Auckland NBL side.

Myles Sutherland joins the Knights squad this season and will provide experience and leadership to the guard-line.

Rounding out the team is Rangiora High School product Danny Wilson who has been a member of New Zealand Koru Tours to Australia.

All of Knights home games will be played at the WestpacTrust Centre as curtain raisers for Rams games, and will tip-off two hours prior to the main contest.
