27 MAY: RAMS v AUCKLAND

RAMS FAIL TO COMBAT PEPPER ASSAULT

by Corey Brown

The WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams had no answer to the intense and physical assault by defending NBL champions Blockbuster Auckland, going down 73-62 on Sunday afternoon.

A strong start by the Rams saw them leading at the first quarter break but Auckland stole back the advantage by half time, leading 33-29. The Rams failed to pull back the deficit and were left with their first loss at home this season.

The towering figure of 2.13m Auckland centre Ben Pepper was a standout performer for the visiting side. Pepper, who started in an emphatic manner with two mighty slam dunks, brushed his Rams opponents aside to amass a game high 26 points and 12 rebounds.

The Rams scoring was spread evenly amongst the ranks.
John “Pope” Whorton top scored with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jon Disher and Carlo Varricchio also chimed in, posting 10 and eight respectively. Tim Edmonds was his usual energetic self capturing three athletic steals. Craig Hickford finished the game strongly, converting two three pointers in the fourth quarter.

But the day belonged to the Pepper inside court attack, which was further backed by strong all round performance by several key Auckland players. Floor general Paul Henare notched up 11 points and 8 assists, and long-armed Darryl Cartwright collected 10 points to go with his 9 rebounds.

The loss leaves the Rams sharing fourth place with four other teams in the NBL competition on four points. Next week’s All Star game in Christchurch will mean a rest for most of the Canterbury squad, but the following round will be a busy one for the team. In week five the Rams take on the struggling Otago Nuggets on Thursday 7 June in Christchurch, followed by a double-header on the road against the Waikato Titans and the Mighty Hawks on Saturday and Sunday nights respectively.

In the curtain-raiser, the Scenic Circle Canterbury Legends match was declared an 80-all draw at the end of regulation time.
