RAMS DOWN GIANTS IN PHYSICAL CLASH

The WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams came
from a 21 point deficit to upset the ASB Nelson Giants
66-65 on Friday night, and register their first win in
the 2001 National Basketball League.
The game, which was played in front of 2,500 raucous
‘Rams Fans’ at the WestpacTrust Centre, was the
first home encounter for Canterbury this season. Despite
trailing for the entire match, the Rams remained in touch
and took the lead when it mattered most - just seconds
from the final buzzer. Left with just five seconds to
snatch back the lead Nelson put up an unsuccessful
jump-shot. The Rams celebrated a hard-fought victory,
much to the dismay of the opposition, who were
understandably disappointed after giving away a hefty 21
point lead.
The Nelson Giants dominated much of the game and
outscored Canterbury in the first three quarters, ahead
59-38 with just ten minutes to play. Tall Black guard
Phill Jones was unstoppable and collected 28 points and
10 rebounds, ably assisted by another Tall Black, Judd
Flavell, who had 12 points and four steals.
Canterbury’s point scoring was spread evenly amongst
the team. Import John Whorton scored 13 points, veteran Craig Farrant 12, and exciting youngster Luke Ruscoe had 11. Jon Disher, who scored the vital basket at the
end of the match, was impressive throughout, and along
with energetic Tim Edmonds brought an intensity and highly
physical element into the game.
The Rams next opponent in the 2001 NBL is the Otago
Nuggets, on Saturday night in Dunedin. This young squad
are yet to notch up their first win this season.
