KINGS OVERCOME TIRED RAMS

The
WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams have relinquished their
position in the National Basketball League top four after
losing both of their away games on the weekend. On
Saturday night the Rams were comprehensively outclassed
by Blockbuster Auckland 99-79, while on the following
afternoon at North Harbour, they were defeated 91-81 by
the PoeNamo Kings.
The two weekend losses leave Canterbury in fifth place,
tied with the Property Broker Jets. The Rams must win
their three remaining matches and rely on other results,
if it is to have any chance of a NBL playoff berth in
August.
Despite Whorton once again turning in a near forty-minute
effort sterling performance Canterbury could not come out
victors against the Kings. Five Canterbury players made
double figures, including a Whorton double-double of 17
points and 16 rebounds. Next best for the Rams was
exciting forward Salasopo Tulua, who converted his 20
minutes of game time into 14 points. Craig Farrant and
Jon Disher managed 11 apiece, while point guard Carlo
Varricchio posted 10 points.
The Kings scoring came in the form of guard Brendon
Cathie-Pongia who slotted 5 three-pointers in his game
high tally of 27 points. Brad Riley was also to the fore
with 20 points, while Brian Gomes amassed 17 points and
12 rebounds and youngster Milos Pejovic notched up 10
points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
