24 JUNE: RAMS v KINGS

RAMS CRUISE PAST KINGS

by Corey Brown

The WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams consolidated their position in the top four of the National Basketball League with a comfortable win over the PoeNamo Basketball Kings 83-73 on Sunday afternoon.

Playing at home, the Rams started enthusiastically and maintained the lead throughout the entire match. At the end of the third quarter, the Rams had extended their lead to 25 points, 70-45. The game was played at frantic pace and included an incredible display of three point shooting with 17 successful long range bombs tickling the twine.

It was a complete team performance from the Rams, with the points spread evenly amongst the ranks. Veteran Craig Farrant proved he still has what it takes, posting 15 points, while exciting youngster Luke Ruscoe did not let the old guard take all the spot-light, equalling Farrant’s 15 point output. Ruscoe’s tally included a pair of three-pointers and an almighty dunk in the second half that had the crowd on its feet.

John ‘Pope’ Whorton did not miss out using his lethal arsenal of low post moves, and converting a majority of his offensive rebounds into points. Whorton registered 12 points and pulled down a total of 16 rebounds, as he outplayed Kings’ star import Brian Gomes.

Up against his former team-mates Canterbury’s Andrew Gardiner reminded the Kings of his talent, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Also to the fore was Captain Courageous Dave Langrell, who notched up 14 points, including four outstanding three-pointers. Langrell’s points were all in the third quarter as he helped propel the Rams to an unassailable advantage.

For the Kings, Brian Gomes and Brendon Cathie-Pongia both scored 18 points, but none of their team-mates made double figures. Milos Pejovic and Gomes led the way for the Kings in the rebound count, with eight apiece. It was a case of ill discipline for the Kings, as late in the game both Dylan Chase and Brad Riley were fouled off.

The win moves the Rams into outright third in the National Basketball League with ten competition points. Their next game is at the WestpacTrust Centre on Sunday 1 July, against the Palmerston North Jets, tipping off at 2pm.
