14 JULY: KNIGHTS v SIT

KNIGHTS ROLL OVER SIT
by Piet Van Hasselt

The Canterbury Knights overpowered the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) in a comprehensive team display at the WestpacTrust Centre on Saturday, 94-65.

The Knights controlled the game from midway through the first quarter leaping out to a 25-15 advantage at the break.

In the second quarter the Knights were able to tighten their defensive grip on SIT and run their uptempo transition offence to perfection. In this period alone the Knights outscored the visitors 26-10, for a massive 51-25 lead at half-time.

The second half was mostly one-way traffic for the Knights, allowing Coach Pete McAllister to give all of his squad court time.

Five Knights reached double-figures in points with sharp-shooting guard Mark McLaughlin scoring 16. McLaughlin also captured the game high in rebounds with 11, nine of which were at the defensive end.

Rams squad member Boyd Smart was dominant with slashing drives to the basket carving up the SIT defence on his way to 16 points, with only three misses from his ten attempts.

The Howell brothers (Scott and Ritchie) again performed well in the Knights forward line-up both scoring 13 and combining for 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

Hardworking guard/forward Blase Dowall shot a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line in his points tally of 14.

The Knights reversed a trend from their usual below average three point shooting, knocking down 4 of their 11 attempts. They were also able to shoot a massive 34 attempts from the free throw line, converting 24 of them for a 70.6% success rate.

For SIT, Michael Walcott led all scorers with 19 points followed by Stan Bidois who was the only other SIT player to score in double figures with 10. Kim Davis was an inside force with 9 points and 8 rebounds.

The Knights final regular season match-up is against the Kaikoura Whale Riders on Friday 27 July at 5pm. (curtain raiser to next Rams home game).
