DISHER LATEST CANTERBURY RAM

24 MARCH 2001
By Piet Van Hasselt

The latest addition to the WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams team for the upcoming 2001 National Basketball League (NBL) season is talented forward Jonathon Disher.

Disher brings a hard-nosed approach to the Rams and is expected to provide more power to the frontline. At 26 years of age, he is a veteran of six seasons and will be a valuable member of the Rams squad.

The powerfully built 1.95m, 103kg frame of Disher will contribute to the Rams interior play with solid rebounding and defence.

Disher began his NBL career in 1994 with the Taranaki Oilers before moving to the Palmerston North Jets last season after the Taranaki side disbanded. His best season came in 1998 averaging 14 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Last year he appeared in four games before he suffered a season ending ankle injury.

Disher explained his main reasons for moving south this season. “The combined opportunity to play for the Rams and a business opportunity with Burger Wisconsin made coming to Christchurch very appealing.”

This season Disher will be re-united with his former Taranaki teammate and new Rams squad member Craig Hickford.

Disher has known Rams Head Coach Matthew Ruscoe since he was 15 years old and is “looking forward to the season and working with Coach Ruscoe.”
