GARDINER
LANDS IN CANTERBURY
15 MARCH 2001
By
Corey Brown
The latest addition to the
WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams team for the
upcoming 2001 National Basketball League season
will be one of New Zealand’s top power
forwards, Andrew Gardiner.
Rams Director, John Watson, said "It will be
exciting to see Andrew in a Rams' uniform this
season. He is an outstanding player on the court,
and a gentleman off the court. He is exactly the
kind of person we want in our programme."
At just over two metres tall and a consistent
performer on the court, Gardiner is set to
strengthen the Rams inside game. His defence and
rebounding talent, combined with his solid
offence, will undoubtedly help to create a
formidable Rams frontline.
Gardiner comes to Canterbury in what will be his
tenth season of NBL basketball. His previous
teams include the North Harbour Kings, where he
played alongside current Ram Craig Farrant, and
the Wellington Saints.
Last year Gardiner made the Tall Black squad that
took on the touring English side, however he
narrowly missed selection for the Sydney
Olympics.
In the 2000 NBL season he proved valuable to the
Wellington Saints, averaging 12 points and 5.3
rebounds a game. This placed him as the sixth
best overall Kiwi player in the Tendex
statistical ratings.
Gardiner arrives in Christchurch this week to
join the Rams in their preseason countdown to the
2001 NBL. The first home game at the WestpacTrust
Centre is against the Nelson Giants on May 11.
