TRAMPLE GIANTS IN PRESEASON AWAY DOUBLE-HEADER
22 APRIL 2001
By Leslie Raymore Watson and Piet Van Hasselt
The
solid preseason form of the WestpacTrust
Canterbury Rams continues to suggest they could
be playoff contenders in this season's National
Basketball League competition.
The Rams visited Nelson for a weekend
double-header, with the Rams collecting two
impressive victories over the Nelson Giants, last
year’s NBL runner-up.
The Rams won an intense and physical encounter on
Friday night 98–90, leading by 20 points at
the half. They also won Saturday night 91–90,
and were ahead by as much as 15 points.
Much of the Rams success was due to the constant,
intense, in-your-face defence; with an emphasis
on utilising the up-tempo, fast break style of
game.
Rams Coach Matt Ruscoe used his entire bench of
players during both games to give all squad
members a chance to impress and to allow younger
players experience at National League level.
2.05m Centre, American Import John Whorton
continued his dominating inside play and
leadership displayed at the Christchurch Easter
Tournament last weekend.
Rams inspirational captain Dave Langrell and
exciting swingman Luke Ruscoe also made
significant contributions with valuable scoring
and pressuring defence.
The wins came without the services of new recruit
and Tall Black squad member Andrew Gardiner, who
had to remain in Christchurch because of work
commitments.
Both games were played in front of capacity
crowds.
