CAMP
As reported in the last edition of Rams News, we
are running a Junior Basketball Clinic for those
basketballers aged 8 years and under (note new
age limit). The camp will run 9am-12noon on April
2-3 at Pioneer Stadium. Coach John Watson will
lead the instruction at the camp and will be
joined by Canterbury Basketball Development
Officer Terry Brunel. Many of the Rams are
expected to attend. The cost will be $30 per
child, which includes 6 hours of instruction plus
a t-shirt. Kids under five are welcome, but a
parent or guardian is required to stay in the gym
throughout. Spaces are limited, and registration
forms are due by March 15. Call 358-DUNK for
registration forms.
2. RAMS INTER-SQUAD ACTION
Last weekend just over half of the Rams
preliminary squad of 20 played two inter-squad
matches in Ashburton and Rangiora.
FRIDAY 2 MARCH: ASHBURTON
On Friday, the White Squad came from a 14 point
deficit to beat the Red Squad 71-58. Ten players
suited up for the match. Luke Osborn led the way
for the White squad with 29 points, 7 rebounds
and 5 assists. White squad coach Peter McAllister
announced Nathan Hyde as the team MVP after his
solid 10 point and 6 rebound effort.
Scorers: White 71 (Luke Osborn 29, Boyd Smart 14,
Ben Jeffrey 11, Nathan Hyde 10, Gerard Bowden 7).
Red 59 (Dave Langrell, Mark McLaughlin & Glen
Bremner 14, Quentin Solomon 12, Stan Bidois 4).
SATURDAY 3 MARCH: RANGIORA
On Saturday in Rangiora the Red team, coached by
Dene Robinson, avenged the loss the night before
with a dominating final quarter to win the game
96-76. All six of the red quad reached
double-figures in points, headed by Dave Langrell
and Quentin Solomon on 19. Tim Edmonds was the
individual star of the night with 30 points
including three 3 pointers, in his first game
back after twisting his knee last week.

A number of players had the weekend off so that
others be given more playing time and a chance to
impress Coach Watson: Carlo Varricchio, Andrew
Gardiner, Craig Farrant, Salasopo Tulua. Terrence
Lewis and Myles Sutherland did not play as they
had injuries. Luke Osborn missed Sunday's game
with back spasms.

with three weekly training session along with a
series of exhibition games:

4. NBL SEASON LESS THAN 5 WEEKS AWAY
The NBL season is fast approaching with the Rams
first game on Sun 7 April down south in Dunedin
against the Otago Nuggets. The first home game at
the WestpacTrust Centre in Christchurch is
against the entertaining Manawatu Jets on Sat 13
April, 7pm. The Jets are led by the MVP from last
season Clifton "Super" Bush and are
expected to play an exciting uptempo game similar
to the Rams.

5. NBL NEWS
OTAGO NUGGETS ANNOUNCE COACH AND SQUAD
Todd Marshall will return to the coaching helms
of the Otago Nuggets this season. The Dunedin
Police Dog-handler and former Nugget
representative Marshall was the coach from 1998
and 2000, before being replaced by German Peter
Schmuecker last year. The squad was also
announced this week with sharp-shooting point
guard Michael Fitchett the major off-season
acquisition from Nelson. Andrew Parke captains
the side and Kane Hokianga, Daniel Ryan and Mark
Bracewell will be expected to increase their
promising showings from 2001.
JETS SQUAD NAMED:
One of the big improvers over the off-season the
Manawatu Jets named their squad after a
pre-season training camp and exhibition win over
the Mighty Hawks. The 13 man squad is: Kent Mori
(Captain), Stacey Lambert, Miles Pearce, Clifton
Bush, Glen Newbold, Adrian Torrie, Jonathon
Southey, Tim Gillan, Chris Hart, Darron Larsen,
Jayde Brown, Sonny Ohlson

6. CBA EASTER TOURNAMENT
Entries have opened for the Canterbury Basketball
Association's Mackenzies Hotel 30th Annual Easter
Basketball Tournament to be held at Cowles
Stadium, Christchurch. There are a number of
grades open and this year there will be spot
prizes up for grabs including a weekend for two
at any Scenic Circle Hotel (valued at $600)

7. WISCONSIN ASSURED OF NCAA BERTH
Tall Black Kirk Penney's Wisconsin Badgers have
almost assured themselves of a berth in the
season-ending NCAA championship after winning
their final six games. This meant that the
Badgers grabbed a share of the regular season Big
Ten Conference Title for the first time since
1947. Penney had 21 points including four three
pointers in the finale.
