RAMBLINGS: Off-Season Edition 13

5 MARCH 2002
by Piet Van Hasselt

1. PEE-WEE BASKETBALL CAMP
As reported in the last edition of Rams News, we are running a Junior Basketball Clinic for those basketballers aged 8 years and under (note new age limit). The camp will run 9am-12noon on April 2-3 at Pioneer Stadium. Coach John Watson will lead the instruction at the camp and will be joined by Canterbury Basketball Development Officer Terry Brunel. Many of the Rams are expected to attend. The cost will be $30 per child, which includes 6 hours of instruction plus a t-shirt. Kids under five are welcome, but a parent or guardian is required to stay in the gym throughout. Spaces are limited, and registration forms are due by March 15. Call 358-DUNK for registration forms.

2. RAMS INTER-SQUAD ACTION

Last weekend just over half of the Rams preliminary squad of 20 played two inter-squad matches in Ashburton and Rangiora.

FRIDAY 2 MARCH: ASHBURTON
On Friday, the White Squad came from a 14 point deficit to beat the Red Squad 71-58. Ten players suited up for the match. Luke Osborn led the way for the White squad with 29 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. White squad coach Peter McAllister announced Nathan Hyde as the team MVP after his solid 10 point and 6 rebound effort.
Scorers: White 71 (Luke Osborn 29, Boyd Smart 14, Ben Jeffrey 11, Nathan Hyde 10, Gerard Bowden 7). Red 59 (Dave Langrell, Mark McLaughlin & Glen Bremner 14, Quentin Solomon 12, Stan Bidois 4).

SATURDAY 3 MARCH: RANGIORA

On Saturday in Rangiora the Red team, coached by Dene Robinson, avenged the loss the night before with a dominating final quarter to win the game 96-76. All six of the red quad reached double-figures in points, headed by Dave Langrell and Quentin Solomon on 19. Tim Edmonds was the individual star of the night with 30 points including three 3 pointers, in his first game back after twisting his knee last week.
Scorers: Red 96 (Dave Langrell & Quentin Solomon 19, Mark McLaughlin & Glen Bremner 16, Blase Dowall 14, Stan Bidois 12). White 76 (Tim Edmonds 30, Gerard Bowden 17, Boyd Smart 12, Nathan Hyde & Kim Davis 6, Ben Jeffrey 5).

A number of players had the weekend off so that others be given more playing time and a chance to impress Coach Watson: Carlo Varricchio, Andrew Gardiner, Craig Farrant, Salasopo Tulua. Terrence Lewis and Myles Sutherland did not play as they had injuries. Luke Osborn missed Sunday's game with back spasms.
