In the
final countdown to the New Zealand National
Basketball League season, the WestpacTrust
Canterbury Rams will take part in a rigorous and
eventful preseason schedule.
With the arrival of the three new signings for
the 2001 season within the week, the team looks
undoubtedly stronger and boasts more talent and
confidence.
American restricted player John Whorton, Tall
Black Andrew Gardiner, and latest signing
Jonathon Disher will all add incredible strength
to the Rams forward line-up for the upcoming
season.
The preseason build up for the Rams includes
several games against some of the top sides in
the NBL, and promises to provide some enthralling
encounters.
On April 6, the Rams will take on the Otago
Nuggets in Timaru. A week later they will again
meet Otago, in an Easter tournament that also
includes the Nelson Giants. The tournament will
be held at Cowles Stadium from the 13th
to the 16th of April.
The following week the Rams travel to Nelson to
take part in another preseason series of
exhibition games. On April 21, Canterbury takes
on the Wellington Saints at Stoke Stadium and
then Nelson on the 22nd.
The final weeks of preseason games for the Rams
include a number of inter-squad trials that will
be played in Ashburton and at Pioneer Stadium.
Canterbury's 2001 NBL season campaign begins with
an away double-header against the Palmerston
North Jets and Wellington Saints on the 5th and
6th of May. The first home game at the
WestpacTrust Centre is against the Nelson Giants
on May 11.
