SECURE LANDMARK SIGNING
7 NOVEMBER 2001
by Piet Van Hasselt
The
Canterbury Rams have secured perhaps the most
prestigious signing of their 20 year history. The
National Basketball League's (NBL) premier
shooting guard, Terrence Lewis, will take the
court for the Rams next season.
The American born, now naturalised, New Zealander
will bring explosive scoring from all areas of
the court, leadership and experience to the Rams
squad.
"Terrence was the final piece in the puzzle.
In our core players we have assembled some
incredible talent. Everyone is hungry for the
national championship in 2002" said new Rams
Head Coach John Watson.
Lewis, 32, has an abundance of experience
performing at a high calibre level around the
world. He starred at the Howard University and
Washington State University, before playing in
New Zealand, The Philippines, Turkey, Taiwan and
England.
In New Zealand Lewis has suited up with the
Wellington Saints for seven stellar seasons,
1993-96 and 1999-2001. He has appeared in 138
regular season games and is averaging a
staggering 27.9 points per game. Lewis has
averaged nearly 6 rebounds per game and shoots an
astonishing 82% from the free throw line. He has
made the All Star Five on three occasions.
In 1999, he was the league's most outstanding
guard and leading scorer with an incredible 34
points per game. In 2001, Lewis led the Saints to
a berth in the final and was the Most Valuable
Player of the All Star Game in Christchurch, with
a 26-point performance against the best in the
country.
Lewis will move to Christchurch in January with
his son Terrence (7). Wife Ali and daughter
Ebony-Jordan (1½) will follow at a later date.
