COACH INJECTS INTENSITY

The
Canterbury Rams have confirmed that Dr John
Watson will be the Head Coach of the Rams next
season. The American born, now naturalised, New
Zealander will bring extensive basketball
knowledge, a proven ability to teach, and clear
leadership skills, to the Rams squad.
Watson has been a student of the game since the
age of two weeks, when his Godfather gave him a
basketball as a baptism gift. Watson's father and
Godfather were team mates on a top-10 US college
basketball team in the 1960s.
Although a relative newcomer to coaching in New
Zealand, Watson has coached internationally and
has no doubt about his ability to get his team to
perform. "I know a lot more about basketball
than I do marketing, and I'm pretty good at
marketing", said the University of
Canterbury marketing lecturer.
Watson has a vision for the development of
Canterbury basketball coaching from top to
bottom. He has a firm belief in the importance of
mentoring coaches, and the Rams' coaching
structure will reflect this belief.
Darren Gravley, Rams Assistant Coach for the past
two seasons, will remain as principal Assistant
Coach. Coaches from throughout Canterbury will be
invited to apply for a number of other Assistant
Coach positions.
