TITANS 16-0 RUN LEADS THEM TO VICTORY

The WestpacTrust Canterbury Rams began their away double-header this weekend with a loss
against the competition leaders and still unbeaten Waikato Titans, 110-86.
The Rams stunned the Hamilton crowd jumping out to a 12 point lead only four minutes into
the game, 18-6. The Titans reduced this margin back to eight at the end of the first
quarter with Prem Krishna scoring five points in a 9-2 run.
The first six minutes of the second quarter went well for the Rams, building the lead
again to 12 points, with John ‘Pope’ Whorton and Dave Langrell combining for 11
points over this time frame. The remaining four minutes was a highly physical period,
belonging to the Titans who stormed back to a draw the scores level at half-time.
The third quarter decided the outcome of the contest when the Titans went on a 16-0 run
after the scores were level at 69-all. American forward Clifton Bush contributed 11 points
over this period and electrified the crowd.
The Rams tried valiantly in the fourth quarter to reduce this large deficit, once closing
to within 13 points after a Carlo Varricchio three pointer. However the Titans were too
strong finishing with a hefty 24 point margin at full-time.
For the Titans, long range bomber Prem Krishna posted 24 points, while Tall Black Pero
Cameron scored 22 points and 12 rebounds. Northern All Star Bush compiled 21 points and
pulled down 14 rebounds, as the Titans confirmed their place at the top of the table.
The Rams dependable inside force Whorton was again to the fore, with 24 points and 12
rebounds. Forward Andrew Gardiner scored 13 points, and has been in impressive form since
the Tall Black training camp last week. Rams point guard “lightning-quick”
Varricchio slotted 3 three-pointers in his tally of 13 points.
The Rams complete their hectic round of games with a match against The Mighty Hawks on
Sunday afternoon.
