A complete team performance helped the talented Canterbury Knights to the
CBL (second division title) last night with a win over Hutt Valley in the
championship final in Gisborne, 80-69. Both teams must have been
tired with their sixth game in just three days at the national finals.
The Knights had seven players score at least six points with athletic
forward Boyd Smart leading the way with 20 points and seven rebounds, in
just 22 minutes before fouling out. American Clifton Bush was the
team's "iron-man" playing the entire 40 minutes and racked up a
double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Glen Bremner was the
Knight's impact player off the bench quickly accumulating 10 points, five
assists and three rebounds and two steals in 21 minutes and was a perfect
6/6 from the line. Hutt Valley was led by Tall Black trialist Calum
McLeod with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the side was unable to repeat
their close win over the Knights in the round-robin stage. Hutt
Valley appeared to live or die by the three-point bomb, launching 37 shots
and canning just 24% of these shots. The Knights used their
advantage at the free-throw line 17/23 (74%) compared to only 8/13 (62%)
from Hutt Valley. Canterbury was able to take care of the ball
effectively, having just 12 turnovers, with starting point guard Travis
Dixon only turning it over only once from 36 minutes.
Congratulations to the Canterbury Knights on their magnificent season,
with just two losses from 15 games in total. At various times in the
tournament the team's depth was tested, but a number of individuals
stepped up to ensure the Southern men of the title. The Knights were
able to distance themselves from the disappointments of the Canterbury
Rams season in the BK League, with a number of players appearing for both
teams. Co-coaches Peter McAllister and Dene Robinson deserve a ton
of credit, instilling a winning and positive attitude in the team.
Captain Ritchie Howell led from the front, doing whatever was required,
and left nothing to chance with never-ending hustle. Sharp-scorer
Gerard Bowden's 23 points paced Canterbury in the semi-final and his
immense promise will no doubt be refined further with a stint at a US
college beginning next month. Smart was named as Tournament MVP and
was joined by team-mates Bowden and Bush in the tournament team.
