RAMBLINGS: Off-Season Edition 6

14 NOVEMBER 2001
by Piet Van Hasselt

For those that missed the big news last week concerning the Rams best ever signing – NBL’s premier shooting guard Terrence Lewis - visit here

1. RAMS FANS NUMBER ONE AGAIN
For the second straight season the Rams have led the NBL in home game attendance. This is a tribute to the best fans in the country, the Rams Fans, who continue to flock to the WestpacTrust Centre in great numbers. The total attendance at all NBL games had increased this season, but no other team could better our fervent supporters again!

2. DAVE RELEASED FROM JETS
Last week Rams Captain Dave Langrell was released from his English club, the Chester Jets. The Jets signed up a 33 year old former British All Star guard in Kurt Samuels. Dave appeared in six games for the club, averaging five points and three rebounds per game in limited court time. During this period the team accumulated a five win and one loss record. His best game was against the Derby Storm with 18 points, including 4 three pointers and 5 rebounds in 29 minutes of action. Dave will be returning to Christchurch this week.

3. RAMS ASSISTANT COACHING POSITIONS
The Rams are now taking applications for assistant coaching positions with the team and the second division squad for next season. Please forward applications/CVs to Canterbury Rams, PO Box 31-172, Christchurch or
[email protected]. The cut-off for applications is 12 December 2001.

4. MARKS STEPS UP IN PLACE OF ALONZO
Sean Marks, the first New Zealander to make the American NBA, has taken full advantage of the opportunity in the absence of superstar centre Alonzo Mourning to start two games. Alonzo was out with food poisoning for the games against Seattle and Milwaukee. Sean had a fantastic game against Seattle with 15 points, including 2 huge alley oops and 2 other slam dunks, 5 rebounds and he made 7 of his 9 shot attempts. This performance earned him some air time on ESPN’s Sportcenter - top rated sports show in the US.

5. TALL FERNS TAKE ON HAWAII UNIVERSITY
The New Zealand Women’s Basketball Team battled well before losing it’s one-off exhibition match against the University of Hawaii Wahine, 74-52, in Hawaii at the weekend. Aneka Kerr led all scorers for with 21 points for the Kiwis. Hawaii were on fire from three point land with 12 successful shots. The Tall Ferns were not at full strength.
