The Nelson Giants turned around their last performance against their South
Island rivals in dramatic fashion, easing away from the Canterbury Rams, 97-71.
These teams met a month ago in Christchurch, and that time Nelson capitulated in
the fourth quarter with their shots not falling. This time the major
differences were that Tall Black Ed Book was in the Giants line-up and American
Darnell McCulloch has appeared to have recovered from a leg strain, pouring in
27 points. Phill Jones and Judd Flavell also featured for Nelson with
double-figure returns. The Rams could not act out their role of playoff
spoilers, and remain at the bottom of the BK League table with three wins from 14
games. The Giants now find themselves in familiar playoff territory, after
a poor start to the season, but will need to keep their win streak of three
games going next weekend in their Auckland double-header. The Rams face
the Wellington Saints at home next weekend. Nelson Giants 97 (Darnell McCulloch 27, Phill Jones 20, Ed Book 11, Judd
Flavell 11) Halftime 45-34
