Canterbury’s Scenic Circle Rams face the high-flying and re-energised Hawks this Saturday at the Westpac Centre. Canterbury won their first home game last weekend over the Harbour Heat, 89-81, thanks to the BK League Player of Week Mike Pegues’ 32-point, 11-rebound display. Kiwis Andrew Gardiner (21 points) and Dave Langrell (17 points) sparked a successful third quarter run that put the Rams in front for good and revenge after the two losses the previous weekend in an Auckland double-header. Pegues’ defence against the Harbour big-men was meritorious and will need some help from Rewi Manahi and Gardiner against the giant Hawks forwards.

The Hawks (from Hawke’s Bay), bring to Christchurch a much changed line-up from last year with a new coach in place. Effervescent Kirsten Daly took the reins and is the first ever Woman to coach in the BK League. She has helped the team to a 2-win, 1-loss record thus far, with wins over Nelson and Taranaki and a loss to Waikato. Last weekend the Hawks were on fire, pummelling the Nelson Giants, 102-63, in a rousing home victory. The starting five of the Hawks is one of the best in the league with Tall Black Paul Henare running the offence from the point alongside livewire Aidan Daly (Kirsten’s brother). Versatile Tall Black Paora Winitana mans the swingman position and the big men are athletic Australian imports, Adrian Majstrovich (has a Kiwi passport) and Pero Vasiljevic. The Hawks bench depth has been questioned, but they did perform well in the win over Nelson last weekend.

The task will be a daunting one for the Rams with a number of players Edmonds. Westpac Centre, still sidelined with injury including Clifton Bush and Tim However the Rams seem to find another gear at the with the excellent Rams Fans support.
