RAMS NEWS:
T-LEW SUPREME AGAINST OLD MATES
by Piet Van Hasselt
12 July 2003
Saints' sharpshooter Terrence Lewis came up trumps against his old
team the Canterbury Rams with 28 points, including five daggers in the
heart from three-point land, which helped the visitors complete a sweep of
their Southern double-header, 108-95. Lewis has had a quiet season by his
own standards, but stepped up his game in the arena he dominated so much
last season. Lewis was well supported with four other players scoring at
least 15 points. In the first quarter, the Rams looked like they were the
team that had played the night before, with numerous turnovers and a
lacklustre effort on defence allowing Saints to jump out to a 30-16 lead
after 10 minutes. Tall Black Brendon Polyblank was particularly elusive
with 14 points in the period and Troy McLean kept the momentum going with
six points off the bench. The second quarter was very much the same for
the home side, but they did get some energy off the bench with Glen
Bremner posting six points in the first half, but were still down big at
the break, 52-37. After a poor start to the third from the Rams, giving
up eight straight points, they finally ignited with some intensity shown
on defence and 10 points from Tim Edmonds in the quarter gave the home
side something to cheer about. Canterbury hung in with the Saints
throughout the fourth, but the game never really looked in doubt, with the
ace always up the sleeve for the men from the capital in the form of
Lewis. John "Pope" Whorton was once again the work-horse for the Rams on
offence, racking up an impressive 33 points, with many coming off
offensive rebounds from stray team-mates shots. This helped him haul in a
total of 22 rebounds, 14 offensive, and was on the court for the entire 40
minutes. Playmaker Travis Dixon ran the offence effectively in the second
half for the Rams, breaking the Saints full-court press and cutting down
on the turnovers by the team. Saints' Australian big-man Ben Knight
notched up 22 points with some good inside moves and grabbed a game high
five steals. The Saints now look in a good position to claim a playoff
berth with nine wins and six losses.
