RAMS NEWS:
TITANIC BACKLASH
by Piet Van Hasselt
29 June 2003
The Waikato Titans guard-line of Nat Connell, Glen
Joe and Prem Krishna wrecked havoc on the Canterbury Rams, combining for
56 points, including six three-pointers, and collected seven steals to led
their team to victory in Christchurch, 102-80. The Titans appeared to be
smarting from their upset loss to the Otago Nuggets on Saturday and they
never really looked like they were going to lose after a 16-2 run in the
first quarter. Foul trouble on Waikato helped keep Canterbury within 10
points at some stages, but the offensive juggernaut came alive in the
fourth quarter and pulled away to the final 22 point margin. Canterbury
was dogged by turnovers the entire night, and Waikato capitalised,
securing 36 points off of them. John Whorton led the home side with 22
points and 15 rebounds, but saw little ball. Dave Langrell worked hard
for his 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, but suffered with 10
turnovers. Andrew Gardiner was highly effective in his 15 minutes of
court-time with 11 points and four rebounds, but suffered a blow to the
head that left him on the bench for most of the second half. Titans'
coach Jeff Green was forced to use most of his squad with early foul
trouble, but there was little drop-off in their effectiveness, with all
but two players scoring at least five points.
