. THE DICKEL & BROOKS SHOW COMES TO CANTERBURY
by PIet Van Hasselt
Tall Black hero Mark "Sparky" Dickel is set to hit town this Friday with his new NBL team the Wellington Saints to take on the Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Rams, at the WestpacTrust Centre. Another recent Saints recruit is Kevin Brooks who has three seasons experience in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and is regarded as one of the best Americans to hit our shores.

The Rams sit in second place in the Burger King National Basketball League Championship with 6 wins and 2 losses after completing half of the regular season. Canterbury have been led by the outstanding play of the "Thunder and Lightning" duo of John "Pope" Whorton and Terrence Lewis. Whorton is number one in the NBL in points (26.3 per game) and rebounds (13.3 per contest). Tall Black Lewis is averaging 22.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 steals per game and will be keen to play at his best against his former Saints' teammates of seven seasons. The "energizer bunny" Tim Edmonds has been the find of the season for the Rams thus far, with his usual hustling style on defence as well as a growing offensive game.

Canterbury are unbeaten at home in the WestpacTrust Centre this season in three matches. So make sure you're there to cheer on the Rams in this vital match up.

3. ALL CANTERBURY ENCOUNTER IN CBL
Canterbury's two entries in the Conference Basketball League (2nd Division) will meet in the curtain raiser to the Rams vs Saints game this Friday at 5:30pm. Both teams feature members of the Rams squad as well as the best of Canterbury's up-and-coming players. The Knights are coming off their first win over the Kaikoura Whale Riders last weekend, 85-81. The Knights were trailing 30-43 at half-time, but a combined 38 points from Gerard Bowden and Ritchie Howell in the second half, was enough to outgun the explosive Kaikoura offence. The Quest have a 1 win - 2 loss record thus far this season and are coming off a 84-42 thumping of Nelson College.

4. BOWDEN IN CANTERBURY U20 MENS TEAM
Promising Canterbury Rams shooting guard
Gerard Bowden has been named in the Canterbury U20 Team for the National Finals to be held in Christchurch at Cowles Stadium 31 May - 3 June. The team also features two players from the Canterbury Knights, Edan Hanley and Joel Hart, and two from the Canterbury Quest, Jeremy Kench and Isaac Heremia. Canterbury also has two teams entered in the Women's side of the tournament. Good luck to all teams.

Canterbury U20 Men's Team: Gerard Bowden (Rams & Knights), Ben Eves, Kennedy Hamilton, Edan Hanley (Knights), Joel Hart (Knights), Isaac Heremaia (Quest), James Ireland, Jeremy Kench (Quest), Wade McKay, Cain Paranihi, Tony Pattinson, Sam Paulin.

5. NBA DOWN TO FOUR TEAMS
The American NBA is down to four teams with the two-time defending champion LA Lakers taking on the Sacramento Kings in the Western Conference Final (best of seven series). The Lakers won the first game in Sacramento, but the Kings won the game two yesterday to level the series at 1-1 with the next two encounters in Los Angeles. In the Eastern Conference finals, the surprising New Jersey Nets won the first game against the Boston Celtics courtesy of a triple-double from Jason Kidd. Game Two is being played today.
