INTRODUCTION
The Rambo Charitable Trust is the
community-focused arm of the Canterbury Rams
organisation, and is named after the Rams' mascot, Rambo
the Ram. The Trust is managed by Dr Leslie Ann Watson, a
former Senior Lecturer in Community Recreation Management
at Lincoln University.
The Rambo Charitable Trust uses sport as a vehicle for
employment training and individual and community
development. Currently there are seven programmes
associated with the Trust, with the potential for more to
be added in coming years.
1. Business & Sport Marketing Society / UC
Ambassadors
Provides future business leaders with practical business
experience
Based at the University of Canterbury
Students receive training in sponsorship, direct
marketing, event management, public relations, web
design, advertising, accounting, and law
UC Ambassador programme uses Rams players and BSMS
students to promote tertiary education
Aims to award two fellowships each year to students
seeking in-depth practical work experiences
2. RAMbassadors (starts in 2003)
in each of the high schools and intermediate schools
throughout Canterbury
students selected through an application process
provides Canterbury youth with experience in programme
development, promotion and implementation
provides a structure for students to gain leadership
experience
3. Rams Night Out (starts in 2003)
Assists organisations throughout Canterbury who work with
low income children, youth, and families
Provides a fun night of basketball instruction from Rams
players, incorporating life skill education
Provides an opportunity to experience a live Canterbury
Rams game in the world class WestpacTrust Centre
Aims to create access for people who otherwise couldn't
be involved, with long-term benefit through involvement
4. Basketball Camps
Three-day basketball day camps for children aged 5 - 16
Occur during September, June and January school holidays
Involves Canterbury Rams players and coaches, as well as
celebrated coaches from the wider Canterbury community
Teenagers 17 - 18 years who have an interest in coaching
apply for volunteer assistant coaching positions to learn
from the best
Scholarships are available for children whose families
can't afford to pay the camp fee
5. Jr Rams Programme
Involves children aged 5 - 16 years and their families
Children attend three clinics run by Canterbury Rams
players and coaches during the basketball season
Members receive quarterly newsletters and attend special
functions with Rams players and coaches
6. Community Outreach Programme
Rams players and coaches visit schools, hospitals, and
any other community organisation requesting a visit
Players typically give educational talks about life
skills such as goal-setting and motivation and/or run
basketball skill development sessions
Players are committed to visiting 4 or 5 different
organisations each week
During 2002 over 30,000 children will be directly touched
by a scheduled visit from Canterbury Rams players
7. School and Community Fundraising Programme
The Trust donates half the value of Rams tickets sold by
participating schools and community organisations back to
the organisations, while the other half of the funds
supports the operation of the Trust's programmes
Will donate approximately $15,000 to Canterbury schools
and community groups in 2002
Develops a sense of community through working toward a
common goal and enjoying the benefits as a group
Stimulates participation in physical activity
