RAMS
vs TITANS: NEWSLETTER
by Piet Van Hasselt
4 May 2002
1. THEY'RE HERE!
by Piet Van Hasselt
Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Rams have a point to
prove when they take on the Digital Mobile Waikato Titans
this afternoon. These teams played in Hamilton just a
fortnight ago, with the Titans winning a high-scoring
affair, 134-113.
Canterbury sits atop the competitive Burger King National
Basketball League after four weeks, with four wins from
five games, followed by the Titans and Nelson Giants tied
with three wins and one loss. The Rams are coming off a
highly successful away double-header, handling the
Hawke’s Bay Hawks and the Manawatu Jets through
contributions from every squad member. The defensive
intensity and offensive execution was encouraging,
especially down the stretch.
Canterbury will be hoping to control the tempo of the
game using the “triangle offence” in the
half-court game and minimise the run-and-gun offence of
the Titans. Adding spice to today’s match-up, is the
verbal banter between the opposing coaches. Rams Coach
John Watson described the Titans’ guard-heavy
line-up as a “bunch of smurfs”. In the first
game, Titans Coach Jeff Green had his players sport a
cartoon character nickname to their singlet and the
public address system played music from the children's
television show.
If you live outside of Christchurch, check out the game
on TVOne Gillette Sportszone at 3:30pm.
