FROM INDY (REST DAY) - MARKS OUT
by Piet Van Hasselt
in Indianapolis, Indiana : USA
SPECIAL REPORT: UNFORTUNATE NEWS FOR MARKS
The Burger King Tall Blacks camp have been hit with some
unfortunate news today when it was announced that Sean
Marks has sustained a cut in the iris of his right eye
and is expected to be out of action for the rest of the
World Basketball Championships.
The injury occurred in the third quarter of the match
last night against Argentina and he suffered bleeding
from the eye with impaired vision. At first he saw black
spots that changed to blurred vision.
He was taken to the hospital and was seen by the Indiana
Pacers specialist who gave the diagnosis. Marks was told
that he requires bed-rest for five days and will be
re-examined tomorrow. He was told that there would be
danger to the eyeball if he were to play. Marks was
devastated when he was told of the diagnosis.
“We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves,
but we are sorry for Sean,” noted Coach Tab Baldwin.
Expected to step up in absence will be Centres Ed Book
and Rob Hickey, along with promising youngster Damon
Rampton.
“We have played without him in the past, so we are
not in uncharted waters,” said Baldwin.
Baldwin believes his squad is mentally tough and has
taken on challenges before. “The team isn’t
made up of one guys and eleven dwarves,” Baldwin
continued.
The next match for the Tall Blacks will be against the
Germans on Tuesday (NZ Time) and Baldwin is expecting the
match to be a dogfight. On the recent tour of Europe the
Kiwis faced the Germans and lost 74-83. Of interesting
note in the game was that Marks had early foul trouble
which restricted him to just 16 minutes on the court. The
Germans have a tall line-up with NBA star Dirk Nowitzki
and Patrick Femerling both around the seven feet mark.
Marks was unable to attend the lunch today at the Hard
Rock Café in downtown Indianapolis with the Tall Blacks
supporters and the team. The players and management
mingled with the crowd posing for photos and signing
autographs for the die-hard supporters.
