1. GRUDGE MATCH LIVE
FROM WELLINGTON
by Piet Van Hasselt
This Saturday the Rams travel to Wellington to take on
the Saints in a match that will be full of intensity.
Canterbury edged out the Saints in overtime just three
weeks ago, in an emotional finish at the WestpacTrust
Centre, 78-76. The Rams have the opportunity to take the
sole lead in the Burger King National Basketball League
Championship if they beat the Saints and the Waikato
Titans lose to the Nelson Giants on Friday night in
Nelson. Canterbury’s “Mr Clutch”
Terrence Lewis has the chance to sweep his
former NBL team and press further claims for a Tall Black
singlet in the upcoming home series against Hungary.
Present at the match will be Australian Basketball legend
Lindsay Gaze who has appeared in seven
Olympics as a player or coach and coached the Melbourne
Tigers since 1971. He is also the father of
Australia’s greatest player, Andrew, who still plays
for the Tigers. Lindsay was the mentor for
Wellington’s coach Dean Vickerman
and will offer his advice to the struggling team. Gaze is
also expected to be scouting the play of John
"Pope" Whorton for his Tigers club.
Saints point guard Mark “Sparky” Dickel
will have to watch the game from the sidelines after
being handed a two-game suspension for his verbal tirade
against a referee in the Rams match three weeks ago.
Make sure you catch all of the action LIVE on TVOne at
2:15pm.
