RAMS
vs STARS: NEWSLETTER

1. HIGH-FLYING RAMS AIM FOR
THE STARS
by Piet Van Hasselt
The Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Rams’ unbeaten
record at home is on the line tonight when the young
Blockbuster Auckland Stars visit the WestpacTrust Centre.
The Rams have stormed out to a seven-win, two-loss record
and are tied for the league lead with the Waikato Titans.
Rams’ Tall Black Terrence Lewis is expected to
arrive back into the country just in time for tip-off,
but it is unknown how much he will play due to the long
flight from China. No doubt Dave Langrell and Tim Edmonds
will pickup the scoring slack.
While the Stars record reads as only three wins from
eight games, the team has experienced close losses on
three occasions, including a one-point loss to North
Harbour a fortnight ago. Evergreen Kenny Stone (left),
36, has taken over the coaching reins of one of the
youngest NBL squads and is also displaying his all-round
talents on the court. Stone is averaging 17.8 points, 7.5
rebounds and a league best 2.1 blocks per game.
In other news, Saints’ point guard Mark Dickel has
been handed a two-game suspension for repeatedly swearing
and calling referee Peter Harrison a cheat in the Rams
last home game a fortnight ago.
2. CANTERBURY U20s
DEFEATED IN FINALS
Both the Canterbury Men's and Women's teams reached the
final of their respective divisions over Queen's Birthday
Weekend at Cowles Stadium. The Men were beaten by Capital
in the final, 57-76, who had a roster stacked full of NBL
players and the Women lost to Tai Tokerau 52-56. The Men
were led by the silky-smooth skills of Rams' squad member
Gerard Bowden who was named to the tournament team.
Joining Bowden on the tournament team were Cantabrians
Cain Paranihi, Joel Hart and Isaac Heremia. Karla Sutton
and Shannon Proffit made the Women's tournament team and
Proffit was the MVP.
3. TALL BLACKS TOPPLE CHINA
The National Men’s team have backed-up their recent
success with a win over World Basketball Power China over
Queen’s Birthday Weekend. While the Tall Blacks lost
the series two games to one, the team improved in each
encounter. Ram Terrence Lewis had 18 and 14 points in the
last two games and impressed with his all-round play,
which Rams Fans have witnessed all season. Hungary is the
Tall Blacks next opponent in a five-game home test series
in June.
4. WILDCATS SET TO RIP UP WNBL
The Canterbury Wildcats tip-off their Women’s
National Basketball League season tomorrow night against
